High School Curriculum (& Graduation Requirements)
To prepare our students with the skills and knowledge needed for the jobs of the 21st Century global economy, the State of Michigan has enacted a rigorous new set of statewide graduation requirements, and our school is working to comply with these guidelines.
With these new graduation requirements, students will be well-prepared for further success in college and on the job. Michigan is developing a highly-skilled 21st Century workforce that will drive the state’s economy, and the economy of our community, today and into the future.
The new graduation standards were required starting with the Class of 2011.
Michigan Merit Curriculum High School Graduation Requirements
MATHEMATICS - 4 Credits
Algebra I Geometry
Algebra II One math course in final year of high school
ENGLISH LANGUAGE ARTS - 4 Credits
English Language Arts 9
English Language Arts 10
English Language Arts 11
English Language Arts 12
SCIENCE - 3 Credits
Biology
Physics or Chemistry
One additional science credit
Social Studies - 3 Credits
.5 credit in Civics & .5 credit in Economics
U.S. History and Geography
World History and Geography
PHYSICAL EDUCATION & HEALTH - 1 Credit
VISUAL, PERFORMING AND APPLIED ARTS - 1 Credit.
ONLINE LEARNING EXPERIENCE
Course, Learning or Integrated Learning Experience
WORLD LANGUAGE - 2 Credits
In grades 9-12; or an equivalent learning experience in grades K-12
Literacy Curriculum
Big Bay de Noc School frames its literacy curriculum under the State of Michigan Department of Education
Standards using the Journeys program as a core curricular tool. Core Literacy learning is monitored using
NWEA MAP Assessments three times each and Acadience progress monitoring
