What is Title VI-American Indian Education

How does the funding work?

The requirements of the Title VI grant are largely fulfilled and supported through the district’s Schoolwide Assistance Title I program. Title VI funding is based on the number of eligible Native American students served by the district.

A portion of these funds is allocated to support a designated part-time coordinator. The coordinator is responsible for ensuring compliance with grant guidelines, overseeing the use of funds, meeting all program requirements, and completing and submitting required grant documentation by established deadlines.

What are the requirements of the program?

Under the current grant cycle, the Title VI Coordinator is responsible for:

  • Communicating with students and families about special events, programs, and services available through local, regional, or tribal organizations
  • Ensuring that eligible students receive appropriate academic and social-emotional support, including individual and group counseling as needed
  • Maintaining a Title VI webpage with up-to-date program information
  • Documenting instructional staff efforts to incorporate culturally responsive content into the curriculum

Additional annual requirements include:

  • Hosting a public hearing to inform the community about the purpose and services of the Title VI program
  • Facilitating Parent Committee meetings, which provide input on program direction and priorities

How does a student become eligible for Title VI?

Eligibility is determined by completing the ED506 Form, which is included in the school’s beginning-of-year registration packet. This form collects information regarding a student’s tribal affiliation and must be fully completed to be considered for Title VI services.

The ED506 Form is a one-time submission and remains on file for the duration of the student’s enrollment in the district. It does not need to be completed annually; however, all required fields must be filled out for the form to be valid.

If you need a copy of the form or assistance completing it, please contact the school office or the Title VI Coordinator.

How can families become involved in the Parent Committee?

Parents and guardians of eligible Title VI students are encouraged to participate in Parent Committee meetings. As members, they have the opportunity to provide input and feedback that helps guide the development and future direction of the Title VI program.
