The Big Bay de Noc School is a consolidated Class D, rural K-12 one-building
school district. Currently our student population is approximately
270 students with an average
class size of 20 students. Our school sits along the shores of Lake Michigan
on the eastern edge of Delta County in the beautiful Upper Peninsula of
Michigan. Big Bay de Noc School operates under the Delta Schoolcraft
Intermediate School District
http://www.dsisd.k12.mi.us/ located in Escanaba, Michigan.
The Big Bay de Noc School is a central hub for the
surrounding communities. The people in these communities take great
pride in their school and give meaning to the phrase a “community owned”
school. In 1997 the surrounding townships passed a 10 year Sinking
Fund Millage. The purpose of such a millage is to secure funding for
building improvements without incurring long term debt and using general fund
monies needed for school operation. Since the inception of this millage,
the entire school facility has received everything from small scale remodeling
projects such as new lockers, tile flooring, windows, and ceiling tiles, to
the large scale projects like our new state of the art science labs, a
total refurbishment of the entire elementary wing and construction of a bus
garage. The recent elementary
remodel included complete newly outfitted classrooms, restrooms and new desks
giving us the largest elementary classrooms in the county and surrounding
area. In 2008 the community resoundingly renewed
this Sinking Fund Millage for another 10 years. The support of this
community has secured the future of Big Bay de Noc School's needed
improvements and maintenance to the facility into the next decade.
In 2000 we added a 5800 square foot library to our
facility which was made possible by a generous local donation. This
beautiful library is one of the finest in the area and serves our
Kindergarten through 12th grade students. Available to
students and guests are 14 computers with internet access, fax machine,
copier, online card catalog, over 12,000 titles and 40 periodicals.
The actions of the people in our community are directly
responsible for the success of our school. Without our school
there would be no community, and without our community there would be no
school.
